My ex’s niece

25 Feb

Last night on my way home I passed a little girl with long, blonde hair.

No big deal, there are loads of kids in my neighbourhood.

But she looked just like my ex’s niece.

And I had a real soft spot for my ex’s niece.

She was the first one of his family who I met – over Skype when he was home for Christmas.

We hung out together when she and her Dad came to stay in London last Easter. We both love horses and drawing. We had great talks about seahorses and  how annoying boys can be, and cats and hairstyles and chocolate.

Whenever we visited in Ireland, she was excited to see me. She was mad about me. The ex’s brother said so.

She must be taller now. And even smarter.

I don’t know what my point is here.

I miss that little girl.

I miss everything connected to my ex.

And, if I’m honest, I still miss him. Loads.

No doubt. I miss Andy’s kids. If he were still here, they’d be coming down in two weeks for Spring Break. It’s all gone now. I wonder if these men miss us even a fraction of the amount that we miss them?

It’s always hard when it comes to the family that surrounds that person. I like to think that I had a close relationship with his mother and little sister but now we don’t even talk. It’s hard to realize that as much as I can care for them, I have no place in their life now. I am happy where I am, but I still wonder how they’re doing. I’ve just accepted that’s how things work.

It’s bit just one person you lose is it, it’s a whole family, a whole direction that your life could have taken, a version of yourself. I’m sure she misses you just as much as you miss her.
